About Me

My name is Denise Kilmer I am an abstract painter living in Phoenix, Arizona. Born in San Diego, CA, and moved to Phoenix at the age of 2. I first noticed my love of art when I was 5 years old. Most of my art throughout high school was drawing. I found a passion for painting after going to school for graphic design. I continued my education and went to school for fine art. In between school and mothering, in 2008 a friend and I opened an art gallery in down town Phoenix called Phoenix Fall Space. We were open for 4 years. Many circumstances happened and I decided to move to the Roosevelt Row arts district in downtown Phoenix. This is where I opened a new gallery called Lotus Contemporary Art in the winter of 2012. I started my art career on a high note. Having an art gallery is so defining of who I am and what my art is about. The closing of one gallery and the opening of another has such an impact, not just in ones work, but of the city and the arts community. My art came alive in those years. And I never looked back. I just kept painting. I have been an abstract painter for 25 years and I love it. My greatest inspiration is color. Of course I have my favorite painters of all time. And sometimes you can see their influence in my art. Just finding my own way of painting has been such a blessing. Spending hours alone in my studio. Being in my own head, holding a paintbrush in one hand and coffee in the other. Here we go. Another painting, waiting to be made.
